The words shabby and chic when combined together is a phrase that was used in the 1980’s by Rachel Ashwell for a type of home décor described as traditional, simple but ornate, casual and elegant; rumpled but tidy. Believe it not the two words used together are a registered trademark and should not be used to describe any goods other than those of the official Shabby Chic® range. http://www.shabbychic.com
Shabby Chic® is the use of accessories, furniture and household items from 1900 through to the1950's to decorate a home. During that period, your grandparents probably furnished their houses by inherited pieces or home made items as money was often scarce so they had to be thrifty because they remembered the Great Depression and there was very little that could be wasted. There was no room for squandering! So, furniture was often recycled, purchased from markets, or collected from family and friends.
When furnishing your own home today, your accessories and furniture do not need to match but the overall effect has to be homely and comfortable. Old items can be painted, recovered to fit your overall design.
